TMJ Massage Therapy
in Vancouver
Jaw clicking, clenching, grinding, ear pressure, tension headaches: TMJ patterns are among the most consistently under-treated complaints in massage therapy. Effective TMJ work requires both external and intra-oral access, performed by someone trained specifically for it.
What TMJ treatment includes
TMJ (temporomandibular joint) treatment combines external work on the jaw, neck, and skull with intra-oral release of muscles inside the mouth: the masseter, medial pterygoid, lateral pterygoid, and temporalis. These deep jaw muscles can't be reached effectively from the outside, and intra-oral work is what differentiates a TMJ-trained therapist from a general practitioner.
Treatment is performed with gloved hands, in short segments with breaks, and with your explicit consent at every step. Most TMJ presentations also involve the upper neck, suboccipitals, and shoulder girdle, so a thorough session looks at the whole region, not just the joint itself.
Conditions this work addresses
- – Jaw clicking, popping, or occasional locking
- – Daytime clenching or nighttime grinding (bruxism)
- – Tension headaches that wrap from the temples or sit behind the eyes
- – Ear fullness, pressure, or ringing without a medical ear cause
- – Pain or fatigue when chewing
- – Forward-head posture contributing to ongoing jaw load
- – Recovery and adjustment after orthodontics or dental work
If you have undiagnosed jaw symptoms, see a dentist or physician first. TMJ massage works best alongside, not instead of, medical assessment.
What to expect in a session
We start with a conversation about sleep, stress, recent dental work, posture habits, and how symptoms behave through the day. From there, careful external palpation of the jaw, temples, neck, and shoulders.
Intra-oral work is introduced gradually, only with your consent, using gloved hands and frequent breaks. Water is available throughout. Most clients find the work intense but not painful, and the immediate change in jaw mobility and tension after a session is often noticeable.
TMJ patterns rarely resolve in one visit. A typical plan is three to four sessions over six weeks, with home strategies to reduce daily clenching load between visits.
