# Why Your Jaw Clicks: How Massage Eases TMJ Tension

If your jaw clicks when you open wide, the cause is usually muscle, not bone. The muscles that close and steer the jaw get tight, pull the joint slightly off track, and that is the click you hear. The good news: muscle responds well to hands-on work.

## What makes the jaw click?

Three muscles do most of the work of chewing: the masseter at the cheek, the temporalis at the temple, and the pterygoids deep behind the jaw. When they hold tension all day (often from clenching, stress, or long hours at a screen) they stop gliding smoothly. The jaw tracks unevenly, and the disc inside the joint slips and resets with a click.

Clicking on its own, with no pain or locking, is common and usually not dangerous. Pain, locking, or a jaw that catches partway open is worth a proper assessment.

## Can massage actually help TMJ?

Yes, because the click is mostly a muscle problem and muscle is exactly what massage addresses. Treatment works the masseter and temporalis from the outside, and where it helps, the pterygoids with gentle intraoral (inside the mouth) techniques that are hard to reach any other way.

## Three things to try at home

1. Rest your tongue lightly on the roof of your mouth with your teeth apart. That is the jaw's neutral position, and most people clench out of it all day.
2. Chew slowly and on both sides. Speed and one-sided chewing overload the same muscles that click.
3. Soften your jaw on every exhale for a minute before bed, when clenching often peaks.

Under stress the nervous system raises baseline muscle tone, and the jaw is one of the first places it shows up. The muscles never fully switch off, so they fatigue and tighten. Calming the nervous system (breath, sleep, downshifting before bed) lowers that baseline, which is why the home habits above matter as much as the hands-on work.
